The Medical Department was concerned with supporting research into medical problems which affected the developing world, and international co-operation on medical issues. In 1969, the department was absorbed into a Science, Technology and Medical Department which combined medical with broader scientific, engineering and social research work. In 1978, the department was renamed the Science and Technology Department, with medical research moving to a new Health and Natural Resources Department and the following year these two departments were separated to form a new Science and Technology Division. From 1980, medical questions were dealt with by the Natural Resources Department.
