The East Africa Department was established in the Ministry of Overseas Development upon its creation to deal with the provision of aid to the East African Community and to states in East Africa and the Horn of Africa, as well as the smaller Indian Ocean island states (aid to Madagascar being dealt with by the West and North Africa Department), and Libya, Egypt and the Sudan.
