In 1972 the work hitherto performed by the Administrative Services Branch was transferred to the British Council. Responsibility for public administration development passed to the Training Department in November 1966.
The branch was concerned with the broad field of local administration, including local government, land tenure, and the operation of local courts, and was constituted to provide information and advice on these matters to developing countries. Assistance was provided in response to specific enquiries, and information spread more generally by means of publications (notably the Journal of Local Administration Overseas) and the promotion of periodic conferences.
