The School, Teacher Training and Social Education Department (from 1969 the Schools and Teacher Training Department) handled assistance for primary and secondary education, teacher training and relations with the British Council, the Centre for Educational Development Overseas and, after 1966, the education work of the Commonwealth Secretariat. In 1975 the department was abolished, its schools functions passing to the Education Department, and the remainder passing to a new Social Affairs and Training Department. In 1976 the two departments were reunited as the Education and Training Policy Department, with Social Affairs passing to a new Rural Development Department (from 1978 the Bilateral Aid and Rural Development Department).
