The International Department handled general questions relating to multilateral aid, including work with the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development, OECD and the International Development Agency, the Commonwealth, and the European Economic Community. From 1972, the International Department was known as the International and European Department, and it was followed in turn by the International Trade and European Department (1975-1976) and the European Department (1976-).
