George Sutherland AITKEN and Agnes Lachlan AITKEN: British. George AITKEN attended the Lenin School Moscow in 1927 and in the mid-1930s, with support from the Comintern, was deeply involved in underground British Communist Party activities. MI5 believed these included propaganda, the collection of military information and planning for sabotage acts. In 1937 he was political commissar to the XVth International Brigade in the Spanish Civil War. He and his wife resigned from the Communist Party in 1940. The file provides glimpses of pre-war 'illegal' Comintern promoted activity in Britain. Volume 5 was destroyed by enemy action in 1941
