Administrative / biographical background

In 1898 the Treasury authorised the purchase of the first printing machine for installation in the Post Office Savings Bank, the case for this innovation resting on the security nature of the Post Office Savings Bank's requirements for deposit books and warrant forms, and on the fact that costings showed that printing work could be handled more economically 'in-house'.

From the experimental use of one machine the printing branch grew to a size such that it was able to undertake a large proportion of the Bank's requirements for forms, envelopes, deposit books, etc. It has also been used for some of the printing requirements of other parts of the Savings Department.
