Administrative / biographical background

In order to bring down the cost of running the Bank, this scheme for small savings was introduced on 1 January 1912. From that date persons wishing to open accounts with, initially, less than £1, later, less than ten shillings, purchased one shilling coupons for affixing in Coupon Deposit Books. When coupons to the value of £1 had been saved, an ordinary account could be opened. The issue of Coupon Deposit Books ceased on 31 December 1934 and the sale of coupons was withdrawn on 2 March 1936.
