Selection and destruction information

In 1977, at the time when the Post Office Savings Bank moved headquarters to Glasgow, the Director of National Savings suggested that the previously selected sample be reduced to six ledgers which would remain in the custody of the Bank. The Public Record Office agreed to this proposal. Provision for destruction of the superseded ledgers was made by the Ninth Post Office Schedule, dated 1943.

Administrative / biographical background

The Post Office Savings Bank opened on 16 September 1861 with headquarters in Blythe Street, West Kensington. In January 1977 the Bank moved its headquarters to Glasgow.
