Letters exchanged between Reginald Lowen and Sir Geoffrey Callender during WWII when Sir Geoffrey was based away from Greenwich and the museum buildings were occupied by the Admiralty. The correspondence provides a brief war-time history of the Museum and the part of Greenwich surrounding it.
Geoffrey Arthur Romaine Callender (1875-1946), formally Professor of History and English at the Royal Naval College Greenwich, was the organiser and first director of the National Maritime Museum. He served as director from 1934-1946 and was knighted in 1938.
