Description

The papers fall into two categories Museum related correspondence which covers acquisitions, administration and correspondence with key trustees' and other individuals for the period 1927-1946. The second category comprises private papers which relate to Sir Geoffrey's pre National Maritime Museum career and to his personal family life.

Administrative / biographical background

Geoffrey Arthur Romaine Callender (1875-1946), formally Professor of History and English at the Royal Naval College Greenwich, was the organiser and first director of the National Maritime Museum. He served as director from 1934-1946 and was knighted in 1938.
