Description

Draft petition to the king from William Grevell, serjeant at law [crossed out], John More, serjeant at law, Robert Turbervill and Humphrey Banestre, esqs, John Stot, William Walwyn, Robert Gilbert, clerk, John Broke, and John Bowryng [altered from Anne Herbert, late the wife of Sir Walter Herbert, kt, deceased], for letters patent granting the castle and lordship of Raglan.

By an inquisition taken before the escheator of Gloucestershire and the marches of Wales, at Cirencestre [Cirencester], Gloucestershire, 20 Nov 23 Hen VII [1507], following the death, on 16 Jul 6 Hen VII [1491], of William [Herbert], earl of Huntingdon, it was found that he died seised of the castle and lordship of Ragland in the marches of Wales [Raglan, Monmouthshire], and that after his death, his brother, Walter Herbert, kt, entered and held the same from 16 Jul 6 Hen VII [1491] to 17 Sep 23 Hen VII [1507], Walter dying on 16 Sep 23 Hen VII [1507]. Value £307 11s 91/2d.

Elizabeth, wife of Charles Somerset, kt, lord Herbert of Gower and Chepstow, is both daughter and heir of the earl and relative and heir of Sir Walter Herbert (being daughter of the earl, who was the brother of the same Walter), and is aged 30 years and more.

For the love the king has for his relative, Anne Herbert, widow of Sir Walter Herbert, he grants to John More and the others named above, the custody of the said castle and lordship, to the use of Anne for life, without rent.
