The Engineering Materials Group (c1965-1966) of the Ministry of Technology was succeeded by an Electrical and Chemical Plant and Materials Division (c1966-1967), an External Research and Materials Division (c1967), and a Materials Division (c1968-1970).
The division as a whole was responsible for identifying the needs of industry for new or improved materials and techniques for the manufacture, fabrication and quality control of materials; and it assisted in technical problems associated with the choice of materials, design, fabrication techniques and protective treatments. The division also arranged programmes to assist industry to achieve required developments and to support Mintech in the furtherance of its commitments to Ministry of Defence and to Civil Aviation.
Additionally, It was responsible for co-ordinating intra-mural work on materials and exercised financial and technical control of extra-mural contracts.
