The The Mathematical Advisory Unit was set up in 1966 as part of the Directorate-General of Economic Planning to provide general mathematical and computer advice to the Ministry of Transport and other related organisations. By 1970 the Unit had been divided into four branches, and was part of the Directorate of Scientific Studies. When the Department of the Environment was established later that year, the Unit was grouped under the Directorate of Economics A. The unit was dissolved in 1971.
