Files concerning the origins of the branch, the introduction of computers in highway engineering design, and research projects, have been selected. Files of a general administrative nature have been destroyed.
The Highways Engineering Computer Branch was established in 1965. Its main functions were: to appraise the use of computers in road design; to develop and maintain computer programs required by the road programme; to examine all programs submitted for approval; and to promote increased informed usage of computer design in all aspopects of highway design.
The branch was abolished in 1985 and its functions were overtaken by the Structural Approval Signs and Lighting Division.
