The Light Railways Act of 1896 enabled the Board of Trade to appoint three Light Railway Commissioners to authorise provisionally the construction and working of light railways, subject to the Board's confirmation, and so to avoid the cost to promoters of private bill procedures.
The Commissioners had power under section 7(1) of the Act to consider objections to proposals for light railways, taking all reasonable steps to consult local authorities, land owners and occupiers. This series consists of a bound set of records of hearings by the Commissioners of such objections, dating from 1898 to 1907.
