The Highways General Division was formed in March 1955 when, as part of a reorganisation of the Highways Administration Group, the Highways Development and General Division was split into two divisions.
The Division was responsible for the acquisition and management of land required for trunk roads; for the confirmation by the Minister, of orders made by local authorities for the compulsory purchase of land for highway purposes and of orders made by local authorities under the Special Roads Act 1949; for general policy relating to ferries connecting classified roads and for contributions towards surveyors' salaries under section 17(2) of the Ministry of Transport Act 1919; for orders made by the Minister reducing the status of county roads; and of appeals arising from disputes between county councils and other local authorities. It was responsible for any stopping up orders administered by the Ministry of Transport.
In June 1956 the Division was dissolved under a further reorganisation of the Group and its functions were distributed amongst the new divisions formed.
