London Highways Division was formed in 1964 to combine the duties of a Divisional Road Engineer for Greater London with those of a Headquarters Division for trunk and classified roads in the London area. In 1976 the London Highways Division was re-organised and became Greater London Roads and Traffic Division.
The division had responsibility for the monitoring of road schemes including the examination of the traffic implications of major re-development proposals in London, and the use of the Minister's powers of direction over planning applications affecting trunk roads. Under the Highways Act 1959, it was responsible for the making of orders and schemes for trunk roads. It was also responsible for the allocation of funds, within delegated limits for the maintenance and improvement of trunk and classified roads and for the examination of applications for grants and loans.
