Frank RYAN, alias Frank RICHARDS: Irish. RYAN, a communist, was an adjutant in the International Brigade during the Spanish Civil war. Captured by Franco's forces he was released as a result of German intervention and taken to Berlin. There he was taken on by the Abwehr and became involved with operations providing German support for the IRA. One such was a submarine-borne mission to Ireland which was aborted at sea on the death of a colleague-in-arms, Sean Russell. RYAN himself died in Berlin in 1945
