Arthur KOESTLER: British. KOESTLER, a communist in Germany in the 1930's, was imprisoned by Franco during the Spanish Civil War. He publicly disassociated himself from the Communist Party in 1938 and embarked upon a life-time of anti-communist writing. Having escaped to Portugal, after the fall of France, he came to Britain as a refugee in 1940
