This series consists of files of the Harbour Department of the various Transport ministries, and one file which contains papers of the Board of Trade. Also included are minutes and papers of the Committee of Inquiry into Major Parts of Great Britain (Rochdale Committee) of 1961-1962, and papers concerning its implementation.
These files are mainly from the P series and relate to appointments to dock and harbour authorities, dock labour, organization and working methods, finance, legislation, flood and storm damage, development, trade and technical advice on harbour engineering.
The series also contains selected files from the Ports Harbour Engineering (P(HE)) sub-series which was set up in 1964 and remained till 1975. PHE advised administrative divisions on the technical aspects of harbour engineering following grants, loans and general construction work that were the result of the Harbours Act 1964.
A number of P series files were previously registered in the PT (Port and Transit) series (see MT 63).
