MT 53
1917-1956
This series consists of papers relating to a dispute between the British Government and N E Ambatielos, (Greek Shipowner) and later the Greek Government, over the purchase in 1919 of ships from the Ministry of Shipping. After a successful action by the British Government against the shipowner in the Admiralty Division of the High Court, the Greek Government intervened and eventually took the case to the International Court of Justice, which ruled that it should be referred to arbitration. An International Arbitration Commission appointed to sit in London in 1956 rejected the Greek claim and made an award in favour of the British Government. The case was settled in 1956 by an International Arbitration Commission.
The papers comprise files, binders and bound volumes, and are arranged as far as possible in groups under the names of the vessels concerned. Papers relating to proceedings in the International Court and at the Arbitration Commission are also listed.
