Description

DEUTSCHE UBERSEEDIENST. This organisation was established in the First World War as a commercial and economic information bureau. After the war, when Germany was required under the Treaty of Versailles to give up its secret service, Deutsche Uberseedienst was used both by German industrial concerns and the German General Staff to collect political and military intelligence as well as commercial information. By 1930 financial support from the German War Ministry seemed to have ceased and by 1936 its intelligence collection role had been absorbed by the Abwehr
