Description

Tor GLAD, alias"JEFF": Norwegian. GLAD, a sergeant in the Norwegian army, was recruited as an agent by German Intelligence in Norway in 1940 and the following year was persuaded to come to Britain to act as both spy and saboteur. His task, together with his compatriot Helge John Neal MOE, alias"MUTT" (known as John MOE), was to start fires in food dumps and factories, to sever power lines and generally to create panic among the civil population. He was also to report by radio on the location of airfields and the effect of German bombing. MUTT and JEFF arrived by rubber boat off the Aberdeenshire coast on 7 April 1941, delivered by German seaplane. Their first action was to contact police and to give themselves up together with their equipment. MI5 was informed and, after interrogation, the ground was prepared to turn them both into 'double cross' agents. Information from both, sent by radio later that year, was carefully designed to deceive the Germans into believing that the Allies were about to invade Norway. Further examination of JEFF's story (in contrast with that of MUTT) caused MI5 to conclude that he had withheld some of his dealings with the Germans and was therefore unreliable. Because of his knowledge of deception plans and techniques he was interned for the rest of the war. However his radio transmitter continued to be used as a deception channel. In 1945 JEFF was repatriated. On his return to Norway he was prosecuted by the Norwegian authorities on account of his dealings with the Germans, though the charges were later dismissed. Unfortunately this file was heavily weeded after the war and much material of interest, including the radio traffic, has been lost
