RAINBOW: British. RAINBOW, whose mother was German and who was brought up in Germany, was approached by an old school friend on behalf of the Abwehr in 1940, with a view to becoming a spy in Britain for Germany. He reported the approach and became a double-cross agent. His German brief was to acquire intelligence on anti-aircraft defences, air-raid damage, troop movements and the camouflaging of factories. His link with the Abwehr became an early channel for deception. His usefulness came to an end in 1943.
