Stella LONSDALE: British. LONSDALE went to France in 1940. After the Occupation she was approached by a German Intelligence officer claiming that he wanted to make contact with British Intelligence. Pretending to agree to work for the Germans, she went to Marseilles where she contacted an MI9 escape and evasion network known as the 'Pat' line. In September 1941, according to her version of events, the Germans discovered her real motives and she had to escape from France to save her life. Back in Britain, LONSDALE was interrogated at length and doubts were raised as to the truth of her story, so much so that she was detained for the duration of the war
