William Curtis COLEPAUGH, alias CALDWELL, KOLLER: American and Erich GIMPEL, alias Edward George GREEN: Belgian. COLEPAUGH, an American of German descent, was recruited in Boston in 1941 to join the crew of a British ship and report on convoy activity. He later made his way to Germany in 1944 where, on offering himself for military service, he was sent to Holland to a training school for espionage and sabotage. In October 1944, together with GIMPEL, an agent who had been operational in Lisbon, he was sent by submarine to the United States where they were both arrested after only a few weeks. Having been tried and sentenced to death, they were later reprieved
