'' Selected Historical Papers from the SNARK Case'': SNARK was a Yugoslav domestic servant who was working in England prior to the outbreak of the Second World War. Seeking to return to Yugoslavia to visit her family, she travelled to Portugal and later Madrid in search of the necessary visas. She was identified as a potential agent by a Madrid-based Yugoslav German collaborator, and, having been recruited by the Germans to report on food prices, civilian morale etc. and taught Secret Writing [SW] in order to report via accommodation addresses in Portugal, she was encouraged to return to the UK. SNARK had no intention of working for the Germans, and immediately volunteered details of the approach to the Yugoslav and British authorities. She was run as a double-agent by the Security Service, sending and receiving SW letters and thereby identifying accommodation addresses in Portugal, until apparent lack of German interest in the case led to its closure
