Freightliners Ltd was established in 1971 as the first company to trade as a subsidiary of the British Railways Board.
The company took over the freightliner service set up by British Rail in 1965 which aimed to create a profitable and high quality freight service with the provision of special freight wagons and regular scheduled service for freight containers. In 1968, the Transport Act had transferred the freightliner service to the joint ownership of British Railways Board and the National Freight Corporation.
Freightliners Ltd was responsible for and operated freight transport, both land and seaborne, throughout the UK and abroad.
In 1978, following the Transport Act of that year, Freightliners Ltd returned to the control of the British Railways Board.
