Selected Historical Papers from the CHARLIE case. A Manchester businessman of German-English parentage but entirely British sympathies, CHARLIE was recruited by the Abwehr during a visit to Germany in 1938 when they threatened reprisals against his family in Germany if he refused. In October 1939 the double agent, SNOW, brought a letter to CHARLIE from the Abwehr, requiring him to co-operate with SNOW. He was to provide information on shipping movements and to use his skills as an expert photographer to convert other material provided by SNOW into microfilm to facilitate its transmission to the Continent.
