Selected Historical Papers from the PEASANT case. PEASANT, a Dutchman, was an adventurer who after much travel was recruited by the Abwehr in Holland in Summer 1942 to spy in Latin America. Trained in secret writing and W/T he was sent by the Abwehr to Lisbon in May 1943, en route for the USA. His codename was LUTINE. He promptly contacted the Dutch authorities and SIS. Brought to England to enable the FBI to examine his suitability as a double agent, PEASANT was rejected as too unreliable to go to the U.S., but his notional presence there was used by the FBI to mount a deception operation against the Abwehr.
