This series contains war diaries of the Ministry of Health, which reflect the wartime services and operations of both headquarters and regional offices. The war diaries are comprises of diaries of events, circulars of instructions and notices sent out by headquarters to regions and reports submitted by regional offices to headquarters. The diaries of events serve as a form of index to the various circulars and reports.

Arranged in a number of separate parts, each reflecting a different aspect of wartime medical and civil defence services as well as the normal peace time activities of the department.

  • Part A records the preparation and implementation of the Emergency Medical Services including a report and historical review by Sir John Hebb, Hon. Physician to the King.
  • Part B records the preparation and implementation of the Government Evacuation Scheme.
  • Part C deals with war refugees.
  • Part D reports on housing.
  • Part E concerns public health including internal conditions in public shelters.
  • Part F deals with water supply and sewerage.
  • Part G concerns food and drugs.
  • Part H deals with midwives, maternity and child welfare.
  • Part I records civilian deaths due to war operations (numbers and names).
  • Part J refers to local authority employees.
  • Part K concerns health, pensions and insurance.
  • Part L records miscellaneous events and steps taken to deal with them.
  • Part M contains extracts from regional reports (excluding London) on war incidents.
  • Part N contains extracts from regional reports (including London) on war incidents.
  • Part O contains extracts from reports of war incidents in London only.
