British Railway Regions were established on 1 January 1963 by the Transport Act of 1962 which re-structured railway services in the UK.
The regional structure adopted in 1963 substantially followed the area structure established by the British Transport Commission in 1953. The regional boards were: the Eastern, London-Midland, North Eastern, Scottish, Southern and Western. In 1967 these regions were reduced to five with the merger of the Eastern and North Eastern boards.
By 1968, the regional boards were considered to have no essential purpose and the British Railways Board's statutory obligation to maintain such boards was removed. In the following year the regional boards were reconstituted as non-statutory organisations.
The regional boards continued to maintain regional railway service until 1993.
