Following the establishment of the National Health Service, regional offices were set up in eight towns where the headquarters of the regional hospital boards were situated, each of them headed by a principal regional officer. These officers maintained liaison with the various bodies making up the regional health services, including Regional Hospital Boards, Boards of Governors of Teaching Hospitals, Hospital Management Committees and Executive Councils; they also liaised with local health and welfare authorities. Principal Regional Officers advised the Minister on appointments to Regional Hospital Board and Executive Councils. They also co-ordinated and provided administrative support for professional services for the Minister of Health at the regional level.
