Selected Historical Papers relating to HAMLET, German [Abwehr] alias KOLBERG: Russian, naturalised Austrian. HAMLET was an Austrian-Jewish businessman who persuaded the Brussels Abwehrstelle to send him to Portugal to set up an intelligence network under business cover aimed at the U.K. and the U.S. In fact partly anti-nazi but mostly cunning and self-serving, he approached the British authorities via British businessman MULLET (see KV/2/328). HAMLET ran a network of imaginary agents in Britain and in the U.S. and acted as a channel for intelligence from the Double Cross agent PUPPET (see KV/2/329) until mid-1944 when the Abwehr lost interest. He survived the war, dying in Brussels in 1947.
