Oscar MANTEL, alias MANDEL, Otto or Max TELLMAN: German. He left Germany for the United States in 1927. After his return in 1941, he worked for the Abwehr in various capacities, including a spell in Paris talent-spotting likely agents among American prisoners of war. He was eventually sent to the United States by submarine in 1944 to act as paymaster and controller of the prisoner-of-war recruits returned to the United States as Abwehr agents. His submarine was sunk by the U.S. Navy and he was arrested.
