Administrative / biographical background

A 3 (Administration) Branch of the Metropolitan Police was responsible for compiling registers containing notification of awards, honours etc to police officers. This duty was later undertaken by PT 1 (Personnel and Training) Branch.

The award of the King's Police Medal for gallantry was discontinued after 1951 and was replaced by the George Cross and the George Medal (except in the case of a posthumous award). The medal continued to be awarded for distinguished service.
