The Departmental Committee on Foot-and-Mouth Disease was appointed in 1952 to 'to review the policy and arrangements for dealing with foot-and-mouth disease in Great Britain and to advise whether any changes should be made in the light of present scientific knowledge and technical and administrative experience gained in recent years in this and other countries'. This followed an epidemic of the disease in 1951-1952, though it had been endemic almost world-wide since the 19th century. A total of 39 meetings were held, the final one in 1954 simply to sign the report (Cmd 9214).
The 1952 committee was the third departmental committee to cover the subject. The predecessors reported in 1922 (Cmd 1784) and 1924 (Cmd 2350).
