Administrative / biographical background

The Agriculture (Improvement of Roads) Act 1955 authorised the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food to make grants to highway authorities in Great Britain towards improving unclassified or unadopted roads serving livestock-rearing areas. Improvement schemes had to be approved before December 1962; and the aggregate for grants was not to exceed £4 million.
