Description

The series deals with agricultural and horticultural credit and taxation, particularly Selective Employment Tax (SET). Subjects include provision of credit for farmers through the Agricultural Mortgage Corporation (established by the Agricultural Credits Act 1928), the Agricultural Credit Corporation (set up by the NFU) and the Agricultural Finance Federation; loans to assist amalgamations and boundary adjustments under the Agriculture Act 1967 section 28; and refunds under the Selective Employment Payments Act 1966.

Many early files have pre-1966 papers annexed from the EF (economics of farming) series: MAF 283

Administrative / biographical background

Selective Employment Tax was introduced by the Finance Act 1966, and abolished (from April 1973) by the Finance Act 1972. The Selective Employment Payments Act allowed refunds to employers engaged in agriculture, horticulture, forestry, fishing, etc.
