In 1954 the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food decided to set up three poultry progeny testing stations. These were national experimental poultry farms undertaking practical investigations into rearing methods and the selection of the best strains of poultry. The three sites selected were at Levens Hall Farm, near Harrogate, a disused airfield at Wheaton Aston and Phoenice Farm, Great Bookham, in Surrey. Each farm had approximately 17,000 birds.
