Description (What the record is about)
-
John Wilson Croker. Mr Barrow sent two extracts of a letter from Captain Napier of the Galatea, recommending that the upper half ports be fitted with hinges and stating the superiority of the Galatea's lower deck scuttles. From the additional fittings in the ship's sides, which would be required by the adoption of the half ports as fitted in Admiral La Borde's squadron, we cannot recommend its introduction to the service. The lower deck scuttles of the Galatea are fitted with oblong square scuttle lids of metal now in general use, first introduced by the late Sir Henry Peake and improved by Sir Robert Seppings and Portsmouth officers.
