Petition of Peter Holmes, Assistant of the Wood Mills at Portsmouth dockyard. Gives details of experience, including prior work on block manufacture with Robert Ferguson. Asks to be considered for appointment as Master of the Wood Mills, if James Burr is superannuated. 4th July1828. Endorsement by G Grey directing the Officers to report the age, character, time of service and abilities of Peter Holmes. 8th July. Endorsement by the Engineer and Machinist. Peter Holmes is 62 years of age, employed under the direction of General Bentham from May 1805 to June 1814, when he was appointed Foreman. In August 1822 he was borne as Assistant at the Wood Mills. Opine he is a proper person to succeed to the position of Master there.
