Description

Copy letter from Robert Palk, Lieutenant and Commander of HM Cutter Sylvia, Plymouth, to James Walker. Approval of the copper powder barrels. Two of them with loose powder were placed at the bottom of the magazine, which is naturally damp from a leak in the stern. After 6 months the powder in them was perfectly good, while powder in the wooden barrels was always caked and mouldy. As a result of an increased leak, the magazine was 'drowned' which caused the powder in the wooden barrels to be totally destroyed. Copper barrels can also be safely moved in case of fire and used in boats as magazines or salt boxes.

Enclosure.
