Description

John Wilson Croker. James Walker asked for a determination on the adoption of his Copper Powder Barrels for the Navy. He sent various reports, which he received from Officers commanding HM ships and vessels, and from Captain Maling of the Mulgrave and Lieutenant Palk of the Sylvia Cutter. Dr Wollaston's opinion was that the best means of preserving gunpowder was by the exclusion of moisture, rather than methods of absorption, which the testimonials confirm. We therefore recommend the adoption of Copper Powder Barrels in the Navy.
