Description

Report on the visit of the Comptroller of the Navy to Milford in October 1813 with appendices, signed by Edward Churchill and by T B Thompson. Has inspected the Rochfort on the stocks, the mould loft, sandpits and smithery, the ground at Pater ceded by the Ordnance and that recently purchased from Mr Meyrick, of which satisfactory title has been furnished to Mr. Bicknell, the Board's Solicitor, together with the lime kiln and stone quarry. The wall and trench dug for its continuation were examined and bore holes are to be made according to Mr Rennie's direction and examined the Lapwing frigate, intended for a temporary storehouse. He examined the roads from Pater to Pembroke and by Wish Lanyon Bay to the ferry across the Haven, leading to Milford and Haverfordwest. Has examined the Storekeeper's office, storehouses and the state of stores, and went to Pater with Mr Rennie, Mr Holl and the Master Shipwright. Has examined Pater Fort and the ruin called Pater Church. Before the adoption of any plan to make Pater a Naval Arsenal, a correct survey of the whole of this part of Milford Haven should be made. We sought a provisional price from Mr Meyrick for the purchase of more land. Recommend all the Joiners and House carpenters work on the Rochfort be executed at Plymouth. Sir Joseph Yorke arrived at Milford on 20th to go over to Pembroke and Pater and Mr Meyrick's fields. The Triumph, intended for a Lazarette, convoyed by the Foxhound, arrived on 21st. The Carpenter was, at times, deranged, and was sent away by the Foxhound. Recommends additional assistance for the Master and the appointment of a Boatswain to the yard at Milford. The salary of the Storekeeper should be increased and attention should be given to the memorial of William Stephens, leading man of the Smiths. A Bury or Beacon should be placed on the Carr Rocks, which run off from the point of Pater Fort. The appendices relate to the necessity of hauling the Lapwing further up the beach, an account of the different borings at the yard at Pater Church, the situation concerning timber at Pater beach, an account of timber received at Milford yard, action recommended on the boundary wall, the building of Slips and the retention of the Boatswain and Gunner to assist with movement of the Lapwing.
