The HG file series was opened for the use of the Ministry of Food, Cereals Divisions. Following the merger of the Ministry with the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries in 1955 the series continued in use. The HGC registered file series was opened to deal with the Home Grown Cereals Deficiency Payments scheme, and several earlier HG series files were re-registered into it. The HG series continued to deal with horticulture only.
