Description (What the record is about)
-
William Wesley Pole. We have received the 3 parcels of small cordage made from the wild hemp of Trinidad, and some of the hemp and its seed, together with parcels of hemp from the Aloe and Plantain trees and Alexander Cochrane's letter. We trialled the comparative strength of the Trinidad hemp rope made at Chatham as well as by Messrs. Huddart and Company, and enclose copies of their reports. In view of the degree of inferiority, do not recommend any encouragement be given to its cultivation. Suggest we defer a final decision until a larger sample is received from Sir Alexander Cochrane. We will report separately on the produce from the aloe and plantain trees.
