Content
Folios 402-411. Letter from Charles C Williams, Roath Court, Near Cardiff, Guardian, Cardiff Poor Law Union, to Poor Law Board, drawing the attention of the Board to the proposed separation of the Cardiff Poor Law Union from the outlying parishes which was brought about by the majority of those parishes overwhelming the Cardiff town guardians attending meetings. They saw it as a means of giving relief to the agriculturists in their present distressed state. Enclosed is a document addressed to the Poor Law Board entitled - the memorial of the undersigned guardians of the Cardiff union in Glamorgan - in opposition to the proposed separation of the Cardiff Poor Law Union. It is signed by Charles Williams, E P Richards, T Stacey, [----- Morgan], John Batchelor and William Jones. Table No 1 - Valuations and Populations for the years 1836 - 1831 census, 1849 - 1841 census: Barry, Bonvilston, Cadoxton juxta Barry, Caerau, Cardiff [St John & St Mary], Cogan, Eglwysilan, Lavernock, Leckwith, Lisvane, Llancarvan [Llancarvan], Llandaff, Llandough, Llanedarne [Llanedeyrn], Llanilltern, Llanishen, Llantrisant, Llantrithyd, Llantwit Fardre [Llantwitvadre], Merthyrdovan [Merthyr Dyfan], Michaelstone-le-Pit [Michaelston-le-Pit], Michaelstone-super-Ely [Michaelston-super-Ely], Penarth, Pendoylan, Penmark, Pentrich [Pentyrch], Peterstone-super-Ely [Peterston-super-Ely], Porthkerry, Radyr, Roath, Rudry, St Andrews, St Bride super Ely, St Fagans, St George, St Lythans, St Nicholas, Sully, Vaen [Van], Wenvoe, Welch St Donatt's [Welsh St Donats], Whitchurch, Rumney, St Mellon's. Table No 2 - Return of Paupers Relieved In and Out Door. Half year, September 1849. Table No 3 - Number of Children in Workhouse. 25 December 1849. Annotated: This case appears to be nothing but a desire on the part of the country guardians to overwhelm the ratepayers of Cardiff with the support of the union paupers and Irish vagrants and if acceded to the result would be that all the unions in this vicinity would require to be remodelled. The only reply to the guardians promoting a separation must be that the board consider it undesirable. E H [Edward Hurst, Poor Law Inspector]. Paper Number: 2179/1850. Poor Law Union Number 613. Counties: Glamorganshire and Monmouthshire.
