Folios 48-57: Surgeon's general remarks. Folios 48 to 50, Describe the commissioning of the ship and lists the officers appointed and the alterations made for the accommodation of the Prince of Wales and his attendants. The ventilation, to Dr Edmund's plan, is briefly described. The ship's company numbered 499, of which 232 were continuous service men, a few Chinese were embarked at Portsmouth as 'punkah wallahs' and at Suez 14 Arab stokers were taken on. The medical arrangements are described. Five horses belonging to the Prince of Wales and some cows, sheep and pigs were embarked at Portsmouth. His Royal Highness and his suite embarked at Brindisi on 16 October 1876. Folios 50 to 57 describe the voyage and the diseases encountered, with descriptions of some of the paces visited. Bombay Hospital and a leper colony are described on folio 51, and contrasted with the Native Hospitals, and there is also a table showing numbers of cases of syphilis, gonorrhoea and bubo treated at the Jamsetjee Jeejebhoy Hospital between 1868 and 1875. Folio 52 has some statistics on the cholera epidemic in Madras Presidency and discusses the spread of cholera in Southern India. Folio 54 has a chart showing daily admissions from cholera in institutions around Calcutta from 28 November to 28 December [1875]. A chart on folio 55 shows maximum and minimum weekly temperatures while the ship was at Calcutta from the end of December 1875 to the first week in February 1876. The General Hospital at Calcutta is described briefly. On 7 February a collection of animals was taken on board, including a pair of elephants, tigers, dogs and a bear. Small pox was prevalent and vaccination from a number of heifers is briefly described. The temperature of the stoke hold on the voyage from Bombay to Suez averaged 133 degrees and they had been steaming continuously for 11 days, with a short break for coaling at Aden. The effect on the stokers very apparent, though only three were put on the list. The question of diet and the system of giving saved provisions as money to the men is discussed briefly on folio 57. The Princess of Wales and the royal children boarded from the Enchantress off Yarmouth, and the Duke of Edinburgh at Spithead. On 24 May the ship was paid off.
